Barbara Sykes Gibson, a retired science teacher from Hampton, VA is fulfilling a long-standing passion for photography. Born and raised on a peninsula surrounded by beaches, rivers and wooded parks, the camera has become a third eye to capture nature’s beauty in print media. Having the love for science has made outdoor photography especially attractive to her. Barbara has studied photography at art centers in her community. She has photographed many events for her church helping to preserve the church’s history. Barbara is a resident photographer and co-manager at Toni's Artistic Creations Art Gallery, in Newport News, VA where a current collection of her works can be seen. She has also exhibited her photography in the Art Institute of Virginia Beach's Hampton Roads Photographers Exhibition, Art Central Gallery in Hampton, VA, Now: African American Artist in Tidewater exhibit at the Charles H. Taylor Art Center, Hampton, VA, Halls of Art XIX Spring 2017 exhibit at the Hampton Roads Convention Center and the monthly art show at the Artinspired Center. Having done photography for “Project 1619”, her photographs can be viewed on the website http://www.project1619.org/. Liz Moore and Associates Realty Company also publish her photography in their “We Love Where We Live” coffee table book. Barbara also does the photography for the Sickle Cell Association of Hampton Roads Afrikan American Festival, Hampton Retired Teachers Association, and the Jones Magnet Middle School's Faculty and Staff 10 Year Reunion.
